About the event

This course explores the multiple directions Latin American art has taken from the mid-1960s until today. As stated by Andrea Giunta, these directions have created a new model in which "Latin American art is no longer inscribed as peripheral but as simultaneous with international Neo-Avant-Gardes." During these six weeks, we will analyse the gestures and processes that the artists from this region explored and transformed, the problems they faced and the new proposals they introduced. Throughout this course, there will be a particular emphasis on the sociocultural contexts from which the different artistic discourses were built and produced. We will challenge ideas that the art produced by these artists is both contextual and global, local and international and western and non-western. We will explore key concepts such as political and historical criticism, post-colonialism, race and gender politics, AI and new media.

Each lesson will include a one-hour lecture, one-hour Q&A discussion, and will be accompanied by a suggested reading list.

  • Class 1: Consolidating Cultural  Infrastructure. Sao Paulo and Habana Biennales
  • Class 2: Performative practices: why women artists employed performance to express resistance.

  • Class 4: Reconsidering History: the Latin American perspective on postcolonial studies, new expressionism and postmodernism.
